Linda Loves....? Now that would be giving it away. This is the second book I’ve read of Jillian’s and although I loved Nathaniel, I enjoyed this romp more. I didn’t read the blurb before reading this book because I didn’t want to know anything going in, I wanted to let the story guide me... and what a tour.... My favourite part... well to narrow it down is hard, this surprised me, made me swoon and I couldn’t wait to indulge in this wonderful fantasy. A wonderful husband in Tom surprised me the most in this story. His growth and love had no boundaries, simply endearing him further. Adam... well you will just have to read about him to understand this love affair. There is far too much to say in words what I loved about this book. It is perfect for a snuggle in and indulge. It kept me on the treadmill for longer which is a bonus. If Jillian’s writing were to become a sweet it would be chocolate fudge... Linda Loves...? Get Lenin I’m going to start my review with a WOW! This is a fantastic historical story based around a subject that always interests me, WWII. But it is more than just a story about the war, it is so much more. Spanning across several countries and years, this story will grab you from the first page. Get Lenin has it all, espionage, drama, thrills, sadness, love and a dash of passion. Robert has created characters that stay with you long after you have finished reading. It is a tapestry of interwoven stories all rolled into one. It took my breath away on many occasions. In the beginning the characters are introduced, the scene is set and it builds slowly to a thrilling climax. Not only is it a thrilling ride but it is beautifully written with flowing, colourful descriptions and fabulous scenes. Every step of the way I held my breath for Eva while at the same time being enthralled by her journey. This is also a story about abuse of power and Robert shows us the horrifying acts and sad stories surrounding war and Hitler’s rise to power. I planned to read this slowly and did so to begin with, taking in each wonderful word but as I got closer to the end I didn’t want to read slowly, I wanted to find out exactly what would happen when they went to Get Lenin. I highly recommend this book by Robert and I look forward to the release of the sequel. Writers I know Wednesday - Shout outs 08/17/2011
I had planned to review Get Lenin by Robert Craven this week but I am savouring it and it is taking me longer to read than I anticipated... not because it is heavy going or hard to read, quite the opposite... I'm enjoying it to much and I'm not ready to let it finish yet. :) So I'm giving two quick shout-outs today. The first is for Six Weeks by Jessica L Demargo.... check out my review on Amazon for this great book by Jessica which is different from her other work but by no means does that mean it wasn't as good, on the contrary! http://www.amazon.com/Six-Weeks-ebook/dp/B005H2FYNY/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1313570366&sr=1-1 The next is for The Dead Beat by Cody James There is only one thing to say about this book.... simply brilliant. http://www.amazon.com/The-Dead-Beat-ebook/dp/B004DL0MT6/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1313570393&sr=1-2 Writers I Know Wednesday - Sessha Bato 08/09/2011
Shinobi, Book One: Concealed in Shadow This homoerotic story is not for the faint hearted. Luckily I’m not faint hearted or I would have missed the opportunity to read this great book. The opening chapters are raw and overwhelming and on more than one occasion I hissed in breath as we journey with Yoshi through his brutal mistreatment but the wonderful part is, we come out the other side and I found myself wrapped up in the love stories. Not only is it high on the sizzle factor but it is a multi layered story about love, passion, loyalty, betrayal and there is some good old fashion romance (in Sessha’s unique man/man way) too. This took me into the world of Japanese ninjas and opened up a whole new dimension for me which intrigued and interested me from the beginning. With characters that will endear you in Yoshi, Makoto, Souta and Daisuke, a great story to pull you in and hot, hot, hot love scenes, Shinobi has it all. Even if you aren’t a homoerotic fan, this book is worth a read for the rich characters and in depth and powerful story. The sizzle factor is merely a bonus. The only negative thing I have to say... I have to wait for Book Two! Writers I Know Wednesday - Shout-Outs 08/02/2011
It has been a long time between drinks... or in this case reviews. Life, again, rewriting, editing... has all got in the way. Trying to fit reading in is a challenge so I’m going to do ‘shout-out’ reviews for this edition of Writers I Know. Firstly is the book I’m currently reading. Black Shadows by Simon Swift. If you like a gritty tale, set in New York, when gangsters were common place and private detectives like Errol wore suits and fedoras and the dames are named Ava and Marlow, then this one is for you. I still haven’t finished this great story but so far I’m loving my nostalgic trip... http://www.amazon.com/Black-Shadows-ebook/dp/B004TAFNCM/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1312344982&sr=1-1 Next is Seithe by Poppet As you may or may not know I am a big fan of Poppet's work. Seithe was the first I read way back from authonomy days and it is definitely my favourite. It is punchy, it is romantic and it will have you turning page after page as you wonder who is Seithe, what is he? What will happen... I cannot say enough about this fabulous book except you will not be disappointed. I also have a little crush on Seithe and this is always a sign of a great book. I can’t wait to read the rest of Poppet’s book on my kindle. http://www.amazon.com/Seithe-ebook/dp/B005DNTPM8/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1312345031&sr=1-1 The next shout-out is for my good friend –Tom Sharp and his great short Unfamiliar Country. The only thing I have to say is WOW and when is he going to publish more! http://www.amazon.com/Unfamiliar-Country-Short-Story-ebook/dp/B004OEKBKC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1312345961&sr=1-1 My last for this edition is Clip by Kenneth Wayne Before I start I will say this isn’t my usual read but then again there isn’t anything ‘usual’ about this story and I mean that in the complimentary way! For something a little different, I recommend you give it a try. http://www.amazon.com/Clip-ebook/dp/B004NIFN7U/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1312346283&sr=1-1 Hopefully, all going to plan, next week I will be able to post my review for Shinobi... I am so looking forward to this one but first I have to finish with Errol Black and Black Shadows... Finally don't forget to check out Recommended by.... see details on my home page. :) Writers I Know Wednesday - Jake Barton 07/05/2011
I first read Burn Baby Burn when it had another title on Authonomy and also had the privilege of being in the top 5 on the Editor’s Desk with Jake. So when this was released as an ebook and I got my kindle, it was one of the first books I downloaded. I have been looking forward to it and once again, as I have a lot recently, became awestruck by this fabulous thriller writer. Wow what a gritty thrilling ride this story is. I cringed, I winced, my heart raced, and I turned the pages with haste wanting to reach the final conclusion which had a twist I never saw coming. The characters are wonderfully endearing, easy to immediately relate too and like. In particular Donna and Dexter who I thought were a great combination and bounced off each other with aplomb. The character of Donna is particularly easy to be drawn to and I found I enjoyed her journey almost as much as the thrilling story. Then there is the evil Marcus and there are no words to describe how well done this character is. You will have to read for yourself to see. Jake has a vivid imagination combined with excellent story telling ability. His ability to set scenes so they are clear in your mind is inspiring and the edge of your seat, what is going to happen next thrill is up there with the best. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a good thriller, doesn’t mind a little gore (which I must add is appropriate to the story and isn’t ever too much. There is no being gory for the sake of it here. It is done, as is everything in this book, well) and wants to go on a gripping ride. I will read more from the talented Jake Barton. Once again I have read a book that I feel I won't be able to do it justice... it seems I have been reading so many books lately that have left me lost for words... a writer, who would have thought. Anyway here is my short but raving review for The Bringer This a wonderfully imaginative and unique story which captivated me from page 1. This is a story about love having no boundaries. How a bringer and an angel will take desperate measures for true love. Add in, Samantha’s smooth, easy to read style with vivid descriptions and endearing characters and you have a winner. I love a good romance and this is definitely one of those. It isn’t overly gushy, it is a sweet romance, wrapped in a unique story. It starts off with a great opening that will intrigue you from the beginning and Lucyna is a character easy to love as she learns about being human and falling in love. James is a sweet yet realistic character who will endear you from the moment he is introduced. I read this quickly, eager to find out whether love will conquer all. As usual I’m not going to give away whether it does or doesn’t... but you can probably work it out. ;) You will smile, your heart will swoon and if you are anything like me you will shed a tear or two. Loisaida – A New York Story I have been meaning to read this story for a while now and finally got around to it and like with Bitemarks I’m very glad I did. Marion is a talent that cannot even be thoroughly described. This is a gritty tale about murder, drug abuse, mental illness and the desperate lengths people will go to so they have a roof over their heads. Marion has a flair for characterisation and being able to capture the emotions and thoughts of every character so they are so distinct and real. This is written from many characters point of view and gives a multi level view of the story as it unfolds. Each characters voice shone bright and gave a different perception to the story and helped unravel it in a unique way. There were things I never saw coming and things I knew that were (Marion’s intention) and this kept me reading, wanting more. So I do not repeat how excellent this book is, I recommend you read it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed. Writers I know Wednesday - Drew Cross 05/31/2011
BiteMarks BiteMarks was one of the first books I read when I joined authonomy and when it became published I jumped at the chance to download my copy and I was not disappointed, in fact quite the opposite. This was a truly wonderfully written book and has become one of my favourites. Many would think this book is about vampires and in a way it is but not in the true sense of the word. I don’t want to give away too much of the storyline but this aspect is only one of many in this multi layered story. It is about abuse and how different people do or don’t recover from it. It is about the light and dark that can live in people and how they can overcome it or how they can just become dark. This story had me turning pages over and over to find out what would happen next. The characters in this are complex and endearing and Drew is able to slowly dish out the suspense and story so that it has you wanting more, wanting to know what happens next. How Shane Marks came to be the character he is and how the investigation would turn out. Added to this was my little crush on Shane and I found him engaging and his darkness simply made him more likable. The other memorable character in this book is his partner, Marcus. Not only was the story suspenseful and the characters rich but Drew paints a vivid tapestry as he guides us through Shane’s life with poetic prose. This is one of those books I wish I had written. If you can handle a little blood and want an enchanting story then Bitemarks is for you. The only negative thing I can say about this story – it had to end! I apologise for not doing my usual Teaser Tuesday and not spruking this wonderful book... so here is my review instead. I planned to give a detailed review as I usually do but I feel I’m not adequate to give this book one it deserves. So I’m going to make it brief but glowing... Dan’s writing sings... each page of beautiful prose captivates. This lyrical writing is not only excellent it is wrapped in the emotional journey of Sandrine. The story was unexpected and helded me entranced for If you enjoy a good literary fiction then Songs is for you. It will mesmerise you and leaving you wanting more. I look forward to reading The Company of Fellows which I have ready on my kindle.
