It is a long time between drinks and my blogs about books I have read by writers I know.

Under scrutiny this time round is Darkroom by Poppet.  Though I found nothing to scrutinise as such.  What I found instead was a raw, edgy, erotic and sometimes brutal tale.  I constantly wanted to read on due to the apprehension and wonder.

The dark, short yet effective sentences in the beginning, drove me on yet gave away little, propelling me forward, to turn the virtual page.  Then the strong, descriptive, emotive story unfolded.

With sharp vivid tension building and great imaginative lines, and a knack for a great metaphor, Poppet kept me riveted, as I needed to know what would happen next, how the characters would develop and yes even though there is an evilness to Victor I became endeared, I almost understood why he became the man he was and enjoyed his change and the development of his character the most.  Was this her intention, to endear the reader to Victor?  You find out for yourself.

Entering the thoughts of both Shauna and ‘Vengeance’ gives great depth and layers to a story which may otherwise have been absent had we not experienced his thoughts too.  And the evil musing are done with aplomb creating further tension and making this a page turner.

The masterful thing about his story is the skilful way Vengeance/Victor manipulates and shifts between his two alter egos, nurturing yet punishing all at once.  Without giving too much away, I felt for Shauna the entire time, experienced everything with her, rode her rollercoaster of emotions. I found I turned the pages, anxious and excited to see how this story would unfold.

The twist in this story enticed me regardless of the brutal way in which it began.  Poppet supplied me with two endings and I am still undecided as to which I like better for both tie this story up in completely different ways.

Poppet is a unique and powerful storyteller and builds tension with amazing ease.  If you like a dark, erotic, twisted and intense tale then Darkroom is for you.

This is the second story I have read in full by Poppet and Seithe stayed with me long after I finished it and Darkroom will do the same.  Darkroom will leave you breathless, well it did me anyway.  I will be dead-locking my door tonight in case Vengeance comes for this dirty angel.

Until next time, keep writing :)
